Matthew 9:14-17
The critics were perplexed by the lifestyle of Jesus. But Jesus saw no reason to go around pretending he was sad. The truth of the matter was, he was happy. He and his disciples were celebrating – we might even dare say they were having fun and this bothered the disciples of John. They simply could not believe that religious devotion and genuine happiness could co-exist in one life. You could have one or the other but not both. Some folks today are not completely free from that concept themselves. Can you find joy in religion? Pope Francis once commented: “some Christians always look like they are coming home from a funeral.”
