Sixth Sunday of Easter –
St. John’s Gospel devotes over four of its twenty-one chapters to the last words of Jesus. Like other last words, they reflect the life and personality of the speaker. Jesus’ farewell discourse is patterned upon that of the great Jewish leader Moses. Unlike most other last words, those of Moses and Jesus look to the future. Moses’s last words stressed the importance of the commandments, and Jesus’ last words alluded to his new commandment, love.
