As Jesus exhorts us to avoid judging others, he shows us just how misguided such judgments are. “Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother’s eye.” It is his way of saying we will not be much help removing someone’s splinter if we have a two-by-four blocking our vision. Our Lord calls for dramatic and sweeping examination, not of other people, but of ourselves.
