The harvesting of someone else’s grain was legal. What they objected to was doing it on the Sabbath. It is quite humorous to see that they were spying on Jesus even in the fields. I see today’s Gospel as our first Christian declaration of independence. The gentile converts found in these words a new freedom from those old laws of oppression.
