John 5:31-47

It is through the way of the Cross that Jesus gives glory to God, receives glory from God, and makes God’s glory known to us. The glory of the Resurrection can never be separated from the glory of the Cross. Thus, the glory of God stands in contrast to the glory of people. People seek glory by moving upward; God reveals his glory by moving downward. If we genuinely want to see the glory of God, a glory and praise that give life, then we need to move downward with Jesus.

John 5:17-30

Precisely what does God share with us of his own life? God shares with us an energy that allows us to grow and to reproduce our kind. He shares with us a mind that allows us to think and discover the truth about our world. He shares with us a heart that enables us to love and to be loved. He shares with us a language that provides us with communications from times long past, as well as with one another. He shares with us a conscience that discerns right from wrong.

John 5:1-16

There are so many things in this world which beat us, defeat us, and conquer us. But when there is intensity of desire, when there is in us the determination to make the effort, although it may seem hopeless, then the power of Christ gets its opportunity, and with Christ we conquer that which for so long conquered us. Let us place our trust in God.

John 4:43-54

We never can nor should we leave the past completely behind. We can draw strength for present challenges from past victories. We can gain wisdom for present decisions from past failures. This is the wonderful thing about human life, it runs backward as well as forward. Each of us has a “time travel” mechanism in our own minds. We can go back and correct old failures. We can go forward and create new successes. Retracing your steps is sometimes the fastest way to move forward.

Fourth Sunday of Lent
John 9:1-41

As Christians, we say it is better to love than to hate, better to give than to receive. But then the world looks at our lives and sees that we are just as filled with resentments and just as possessed by greed as the person who has never heard of Christ. That kind of performance scrambles the message and makes the gospel impossible to understand. But a life that has truly been changed by the power of God is the most understandable sermon in all the world.

Luke 18:9-144

We need to discover humility and humility is liberating. It enables us to stop thinking about what we have done and what we deserve and on what we focus instead on what God has done and how much God deserves. Humility may begin with beating one’s breast and looking at the ground. But mature humility looks exuberantly up to heaven, not with the arrogance of a Pharisee, mind you, but with joyful thanksgiving of those who are thrilled to know that they are loved.

The Annunciation of the Lord
Luke 1:26-38

Not knowing what lies ahead of us, can we hand God a blank check on our life and give him total freedom to do what he wants with us? Today, with faith in God and with the support of one another, let us do our best to be faithful to whatever God asks of us. We, too, have our many excuses but this world would lose so much of God’s presence and love if we are filled with self-pity, if we believe that the problems and challenges are too great because we see them through our limited vision and not with the eyes of faith.

Luke 11:14-23

Wars begin long before the first shot is fired; houses collapse well before the first crack in the foundation; families fall apart long before the first slammed door. When our own needs come before the common good, when we cannot see or refuse to see things from the perspective of the other person, when the accumulation of wealth and the pursuit of status take the place of the things of God, “war” is certain: a family’s unity disintegrates, a circle of friendship is broken.

Mathew 5:17-19

We label people as great because of their achievements, high office, or star status. But true greatness has more to do with who we are spiritually than with what we achieve publicly. The more we follow God’s instructions in our personal life, the way we conduct our business and government, and the way we care for the planet, the greater we will be in God’s sight. So, let us determine to be genuinely great on God’s terms!

Matthew 18:21-35

In his model prayer, Jesus taught us to pray, “Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.” How can we continue to receive God’s forgiveness if we have unforgiving hearts? What we receive from God we are to pass on to others. It is not through our own efforts that we are forgiven but through the grace of God.
