Our Lady of Guadalupe –

Today we are once again reminded of the importance of the role of Mary in our lives as we turn our attention to Our lady of Guadalupe. When we turn to Mary, we see what was meant for us from the beginning, a life of grace. God’s glory is already shining through our human condition. If nothing else, this day serves to remind us that Mary is still very much alive in our church.

In today’s short parable Jesus asks us to embrace an “adult” faith, faith that is centered in the realization that we are not the center of the universe, that there exists outside of ourselves a sacred entity that breathes life into our beings and animates all creation.

Second Sunday of Advent –

I wonder how many of us feel exiled at times; cut off, maybe from family, friends, community, from God? Maybe our dreams have crashed. Maybe we feel alone and so distanced from God. If so, God has a message for us: “Comfort, give comfort to my people.” And I also wonder how many people may feel cut off from the Church, not accepted for whatever reason. God is with us all.

We change the world by changing ourselves and then by changing the world within reach around us. Each of us can be world-changers if we are willing to set realistic goals and exert reasonable effort. If we create one thing of beauty, we have changed the world.

St. John Damascene –

We who are able to hear and see can be very selective in what we choose to hear or see. Advent invites us to hear the Word of God in the conversations of life and see the hand of God in the events of each and every day. Will we accept the challenge?

St. Francis Xavier –

We have a habit of equating religion with a set of beliefs. But today Jesus is saying something different. He says religion has to do with how we live, not only what we believe in. Beliefs are important but it is our deeds that embody our faith in God. You may recall the words of Forrest Gump: “Stupid is as stupid does.” Today Jesus is saying: “Faith is as faith does.”

The famous British author G.K. Chesterton commented that a great person is one who makes others feel great. That is what Jesus did to thousands, made them discover themselves. He helped them to get their lives in order to see it in perspective. In Jesus they rediscovered purpose and meaning for themselves.

Each 24 hours God offers me a new day like a blank page. Each day has good moments but the best moment of all is the present moment that I can fill with serious and positive thoughts, thoughts of joy and optimism, thoughts of peace for myself and for others.
