We have been born again of water and the Holy Spirit. Jesus has breathed new life within us. We are now called to change the world and pray that the realization of what has happened within us will give us the courage to live this new life with boldness.

Second Sunday of Easter/Divine Mercy Sunday –

We all know what it is like to live in a Good Friday world, but we must appreciate what it is like to live in an Easter Sunday world. It is up to us to make the difference by the way we live with and for one another. We can make a difference when we set aside our pride, our selfishness, and our indifference. Have the courage to reach out and touch the risen Jesus in one another today.

When we look at our limitations, we can become paralyzed with fear and forget that we have all been called to be evangelists. We spread the good news by serving the most basic material and spiritual needs of others like feeding the hungry, clothing he naked, consoling the grieving or just giving someone a listening ear.

The Easter story is a profound affirmation of the values of human life and the goods of the earth.  Today’s lesson offers more than a generalized affirmation of human life and worldly goods. Indirectly it sanctifies the importance of common work. Why else would the risen Lord have appeared to men at work as well as to people at prayer. Common work is the way most people fulfill their service to God and neighbor.

The Christian community would never have expanded beyond Jerusalem if the disciples had not cast off their fears and worries. On this Easter Thursday we take a closer look at how we may be worrying our lives away and missing out on the joy of trusting Jesus who makes us his witnesses to all the world.

The message of Emmaus is that Jesus walks with us on those paths which lead from our dashed hopes to our unknown future. He walks with us and with patience we shall see his presence in the new life towards which he leads us. How often do we leave Jerusalem and head back to Emmaus? Disappointed that life is not turning out the way I planned. My hopes for change had crashed. We felt abandoned. But then someone met us along the way and life turned around again.

We need to be messengers of the resurrection.  We need to let go of our distant, detached image of Jesus so that we can take on the hard and demanding work of going forth and making known his presence in our midst. Our simple and quiet works of compassion need to reveal the reality of Jesus’ love in the lives of the poor and forgotten right where we live. We need to stop staring into empty tombs and recognize the risen Jesus in every aspect of our life.

Easter calls us beyond ourselves, our wants, our fears. Christ’s rising from the dead demands a change in attitude, in perspective, in the way we approach the complexities and demands of the world. The resurrection pulls us out of our own “tombs” of indifference and cynicism, and self-centeredness.

Easter Sunday –

What does Easter mean to us? Many people think that Easter is primarily a message about life after death. The problem is, that concept of Easter falls short of where all of us are living right now. You and I do not spend much time thinking about life after death because we are struggling to get through this life. Easter reminds us in our everyday life that we can depend on that same faith that Jesus had in his Father.

Holy Saturday –

The importance of Holy Saturday lies in its power to bring us to the kind of faith the spiritual masters call mature. Holy Saturday faith is not about counting our blessings; it is about dealing with darkness and growing in hope. Without the Holy Saturdays of life none of us may ever really mature spiritually.
